To cut right to it, the Obfuscation of Scripture review series of Casey Chalk's The Obscurity of Scripture is insanely late and behind schedule, due to multiple factors in my life. A few days ago, I had an idea for changing it and almost immediately decided on implementing it; this will no longer be a review series, but a single book-length response, yet which still responds chapter by chapter. This will have certain advantages over a blog series:
First, a published book will more rapidly gain the attention of people on either side of the biblical perspicuity debate than a blog review will (though I had and still have no doubt that this review series would have gained good traction).
Second, and perhaps the most decisive reason for me, this will allow me to work on responses to chapters in any order I wish, as opposed to having to prioritise chapters in the order they appear in the book, since that was the order of my review series. This will allow me to work immediately on issues that I am more acquainted with, rather than wasting time with slow progress because I have to read more before writing the critique of the chapter I am up to.
Third, I don't have time expectations or restraints in writing the book. This may sound ironic as I had allowed the series to be delayed for months at this point, but the series did have an expectation of relatively frequent postings, which I could not achieve. A book will allow me to work on it as long as I need and as detailed as I like, thanks to the lack of time restraints.
So, that is that. The working title so far is The Obfuscation of Scripture: Against Casey Chalk on the Clarity of Scripture. Additionally though, I have heard a number of those in the Reformation/post-Reformation traditions having their faith shaken by that book and thus considering a conversion to Rome. If you are one of those people, please feel free to send me an email and we can discuss those questions you have, since I have read through the book and already have responses to many of its assertions. If you yourself are confident but know someone else having these same doubts, tell them to email me.
